The Mkokoteni Derby is a grassroots league in development, built to celebrate mkokoteni culture in Kenya. The mkokoteni, the handcart pushed and pulled through every market and trading centre in the country, is one of the hardest working vehicles in the economy, and the people who move them are rarely seen by it.
The league is imagined around competitive racing, community and recognition for an everyday trade: organised events that celebrate the skill and effort of mkokoteni operators and bring their contribution into the open.
It sits alongside AirPocket Cycling as part of a growing family of sport and community ventures.
